Ecuador Closing Borders to Venezuela Refugees

These past few months, many have criticized the U.S. policies of securing their border and turning away illegal migrants, yet other nations are now doing the same thing.  In the wake of Venezuela's ongoing deterioration, the nation of Ecuador is not beginning to close their border to the ever-increasing influx of Venezuelan refugees.  Since 2014 over 2 million Venezuelans have fled their country, with over over 500,000 going to Ecuador.  Now Ecuador's leaders are stating that they can no longer take in such massive numbers of migrants.

Many refugees, who have been reduced to eating garbage to survive, are now facing closed borders not only in Ecuador, but also in Columbia & Brazil.  The mass influx of refugees has created destabilization and violence in the neighboring nations and leaders and residents alike are stating that they do not have the resources or ability to accommodate so many desperate people.  Making matters worse, radicals have mixed in with the refugees and have instigated conflict, leading to reprisal attacks by local residents.

Venezuela should serve as a lesson for many.  Firstly that the U.S. is not the only nation in the world with legitimate border concerns.  Secondly, despite our strong desire to help, an open border is not the right solution, nor even a feasible one as it will inevitably drain our resources and lead to even more conflict.  Most importantly, the deterioration of Venezuela must serve as a dire lesson for the Socialist Left in Western nations.  Socialism has repeatedly failed again and again, with Venezuela only serving as the latest example.  Socialism does not work, and it's time for us to abandon it.
