Iranian Artist Fights for Justice

In the year 2010, a young Iranian woman by the name of Massoumeh Attaie decided that she wanted a divorce from her abusive husband.  Her Father-in-Law was angry over the prospect of his family being "dishonored" and threw acid in Massoumeh's face, permanently disfiguring her.  Massoumeh was not able to obtain justice as her Father-in-Law threatened to do the same thing to her son if she tried to press chargers.  In the end, Massoumeh decided that for the sake of her son's safety, she had to abandon any hope of receiving justice for this terrible crime.

Today, Massoumeh works as an artist, bringing images of her suffering to her artwork as part of a campaign to help bring an end to this kind of "honor violence" that permeates throughout the Middle East.
