TLP Calls for Asia Bibi's Death

Asia Bibi with two of her Children
In November of 2010, Asia Bibi, a Christian woman and married mother of five was sentenced to death for “blasphemy.”  In June of 2009, while working as a farm laborer, an argument broke out between Asia and her Muslim coworkers.  They accused her of defaming Muhammad, and a mob later stormed her home and beat her & her family.

For over 8 years Asia Bibi has sat on death row in Pakistan.  Even if she is released, she will not be safe.  Jihadists have vowed to kill her if released, one Mosque leader even put a $10,000 bounty on her head.  Those who dare to speak out for her in Pakistan also find themselves in danger.  Governor Salmann Taseer (Muslim) and Minority Affairs Minister Shabaz Bhatti  (Christian) were both murdered for defending Asia.  After killing Shabaz Bhatti, his assassins left a note on his shot-up car, vowing the same punishment for anyone who challenges the infamous “Blasphemy Laws” of Pakistan.

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan Party supporters call for Asia Bib's Death

Thus far, International pressure has prevented her execution, but Asia is constantly beaten by prisoners and guards alike, and suffers from illness and isolation.  Now, she is in a more precarious situation than ever.  Recently, thousands of supporters of the ultra-religious party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) took to the streets, demanding Asia Bibi's execution and threatening massive nation-wide protests if the Pakistani Supreme Court decides to release her.   This kind of mob violence often leads to violent attacks on anyone in Pakistan who is accused of violating the "blasphemy laws" and it also prevents sympathetic political leaders from abolishing, or at the very least, reforming the "blasphemy laws" to make them more humane & lenient.
