The Qur'an & the Mary Dilemma

It is believed by practitioners of Islam that the Qur'an is the direct, un-flawed, and unchanged spoken word of Allah himself to Muhammad.  If there is but one mistake in the Qur'an, then it's wrong.  In fact, the Qur'an itself says this.  Surah 4:82-"Then do they not Reflect upon the Qur'an?  If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found in it much contradiction.  Well, there is much contradiction in the Qur'an, but for now, we shall focus on one.

Years ago when I was examining the Bible and the Qu'ran, I noticed an odd finding.   In Surah 19, entitled "Maryam," we read in Surah 19:16-19 tells how the Mary received Jesus even though she was a Virgin.  However, as we read on to Surah 19:27-28, I noticed something strange.  The verse reads: "Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.  O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."  Now in the first verse, people are stating Mary did a shameful thing by having a child out of wedlock, but then they refer to her as the "Sister of Aaron," and state that her father was not a man of evil.  I found this strange because during all my years of attending church, I never heard of the Virgin Mary being addresses as the "Sister of Aaron."  It was never mentioned in the New Testament that Mary had Siblings.  In Surah 66:12, it was further stated that "Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient."  Now it mentions that the Virgin Mary is the Sister of Aaron and Daughter of Imran, neither of which is mentioned in the New Testament nor in traditional Christian writings.

Now in the Bible, the only Aaron we know of was the brother of Moses in the Old Testament who served as a prophet and was the founder and head of the Israelite Priesthood, and the father of Aaron and Moses was Amram.  In 1 Chronicles 6:2-4 we see that in addition to Aaron and Moses, Amram had a daughter, Miram, who was the sister of Aaron and Moses.  Now you have a problem, because it's clear that Muhammad is thinking that Miram, the sister of Aaron & Daughter of Amram is the same Mary who was the Mother of Jesus.  This is a problem because Aaron and Moses lived during the time of Exodus, over 1300 years before the birth of Jesus and Christian Tradition states that the Virgin Mary's father was a man by the name of Joachim, not Imram (Amram) who Chronicles states was the Father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

So how is this dilemma resolved?  Islamic scholars cannot admit that Muhammad was wrong and the Qur'an is mistaken, otherwise the entire foundation of the Islamic faith collapses.  Sahih Muslim 25:5326 tries to resolve this dilemma by stating that people in Mary's time referred to each other with names of famous prophets and famous figures of the past.  However, studies by Biblical scholars, cultural anthropologists, and archaeologists find no proof of this being a practice.  Throughout the Qur'an I found a repetitive pattern of Biblical stories and accounts being told in a mixed-up, distorted pattern in the Qur'an.  Now it's understandable that Muhammad, who comes from an Arab pagan background, was not very familiar with the Jewish and Christian scriptures.  In all likelihood, he simply heard various stories from the practitioners of both faiths and he retold them.  Unfortunately, he made a mistake and mixed up Mary, the mother of Jesus, with Miriam, the Sister of Aaron & Daughter of Amram.  This means that the Qur'an is not the words of God, but the word of a man, and this man made a serious mistake.
