Christian Man Acquitted of Blasphemy Charge by Lahore Court
Imran Gharfur Masih was a Christian man who worked in his family's bookshop in Faisalabad. On July 1, 2009, he was clearing out trash from the bookstore and noticed that among the items he was throwing away was an old Arabic book. Concerned that this may be a religious book, he consulted with his Muslim neighbor, Hajji Liaquat Ali. His neighbor assured him the book was meaningless, so Imran tossed it into a fire. Hajji later returned, retrieved the burned book, and accused Imran of burning a Qur'an. Hajji did this because he wanted the storefront that was leased to the family's bookshop for the purpose of expanding his own business. Before long, Imam's began blasting this lie over loudspeakers and a mob of gathered outside the family home, demanding Imran's death. The mob attempted to burn down their home before the police intervened and arrest Imran.
The mob followed the police and eventually over 1,000 gathered at the station and began to demand Imran's death. The mob chanted "Hang him who disgraces the Holy Qur'an...Christians are dogs." On January 11, 2010 Imran was sentenced to life in prison and fined 100,000 Rupees. His appeal was postponed 70 times. Finally, Imram was acquitted and released after spending over 10 years in prison. In Pakistan, false accusations of blasphemy are common. They're often motivated by personal vendettas and religious hatred. Accusations often spark lynch mobs and vigilante murders. Even those who are fortunate to escape this, as Imran was, often spend years in prison. Many who are eventually released remain in constant danger. Asia Bibi for instance spent over 8 years on death row for blasphemy. When she was released, radicals in Pakistan called for her death and placed a $10,000 bounty on her head. Though Asia was fortunate enough to obtain asylum in another country, many such Pakistani Christians are not so fortunate and are forced to stay in hiding out of fear of being recognized and killed by Islamic vigilantes.
