Pakistani Christian Nurses Accused of Blasphemy
Even during the COVID Pandemic, Blasphemy Laws are under full-swing in Pakistan. On April 09, 2021, Staff Nurse Mariam Lal and Student Nurse Neush Arooj were arrested by Pakistani police under section 295-B of Pakistan's Blasphemy code. Two two nurses, who worked in a Faisalabad Hospital, were accused of blasphemy after Neush Arooj removed a sticker with a Qur'anic passage on it from a cupboard that she was cleaning. Under section 295-B, these women could face a sentence of life in prison. However, for many Pakistanis, this punishment isn't severe enough. As they were being arrested, a mob gathered and began chanting: "Beheading the Only Punishment for Blasphemer."
As the two nurses were being arrested, one of the hospital ward staff, Muhammad Waqas, attacked Mariam Lal with a knife, wounding her in the arm. Muhammad Waqas called Lal a "Filthy daughter of a Bitch" and stated that he wished he had killed her. The two nurses defended themselves by stating that the sticker was already torn up and they were simply trying to do the job they were told to do, they had not interest or intention of insulting Islam in any manner. Numerous organizations such as the Minorities Alliance Pakistan (MAP) are calling for the charges to be dropped and for Muhammad Waqas to be arrested. They are also calling for Pakistan's Blasphemy Laws to be abolished. As of now, the two young women remain in jail. Unfortunately, even if the charges are dropped, they will not be safe. This incident shows how quickly an angry mob can be worked up over this. They will not be able to return to work at the hospital as they would face a hostile staff that could try and finish what Muhammad Waqas started. In all likelihood, they will have to leave Faisalabad and move to another area of the country.
