Four School Children in England Suspended for "Disrespecting the Qur'an"
In February of this year, four students at Wakefield's Kettlethorpe High School in England were suspended for school for allegedly "disrespecting the Qur'an." According to the the BBC, one student brought the Qur'an to school after losing a bet with his friends when he lost a game of "Call of Duty." While at the school, the Qur'an suffered a slight tear to the the cover and had some dirt on a few of the pages. Islamic community leader Akef Akbar stated that this happened because the Qur'an was kicked around on school premises, a claim denied by both the students and school who stated that there was no malicious intent involved in the incident.
For this seemingly harmless bet, four students at the school were suspended for not showing the Qur'an "the respect that it deserves." Personally, I don't respect a book that calls Christians and Jews "The Worst of Creatures" (Surah 98:6), that endorses sex slavery "Forbidden to you are all married women, except whom your right hand possesses" (Surah 4:24), and calls for the death of unbelievers "I will strike terror into the disbelievers. Smite them upon their necks" (Surah 8:12). Odd that we are supposed to respect a book that clearly teaches its followers not to respect us.
This incident created such a stir that school teachers and police had to meet with Muslim community leaders and local councils to assure that no malice was intended and the students would be disciplined. Sadly, this outreach along with the local Iman's assurances that the boy had no malicious intent has not prevented the 14-year-old from receiving death threats for this incident. For many, this suspension seems like a harsh punishment and the death threats are a severe overreaction, as well as an example of "Creeping Dhimmitude" here in the West. British Home Secretary Suella Braverman stated that teachers should not be forced to answer to self-appointed community leaders. She further stated that Freedom of Speech is a fundamental right and right now, it's going in the wrong direction. Islam should not be granted "special status" to protect it from disrespect, and that the infamous Blasphemy Laws that exist in nations like Pakistan must not come to Great Britain. One should consider that if an incident like this happened in Pakistan or Egypt, there would have likely been a riot with people getting beaten, even killed. Those who would be fortunate enough to survive the riot would have been arrested for blasphemy, and likely end up being imprisoned for months, even years. This hasn't happened so much in the West, yet, but we're on the way there, as this incident clearly proves.
