Mother Imprisoned in Dubai with her Child for Drinking Wine.

Dr. Ellie Holman was on a flight from London to Dubai when she was offered a glass of wine on the flight.  However, she failed to realize that such a think was considered "illegal" in Dubai, and apparently this even applies if you're on a flight from a Western nation to Dubai.  A person can be charged with possession if traces of alcohol are found in their blood, even in cases where it was consumed on a flight or in a different country.  Upon landing, Dr. Holman and her four-year-old daughter were incarcerated for three days in a filthy cell.  Though released, Dr. Holman feared that she may not be allowed to leave as she was threatened to be imprisoned for a year.  Luckily, her case was heard by human rights activists, and under intense pressure, Dubai agreed to allow Dr. Holman to leave the country with her daughter.

Despite being freed, the incident cost Dr. Holman tens of thousands of British Pounds ($20,000-30,000), which has placed severe strains on her family's finances.  Human Rights activists have shown in the past that despite Dubai's apparent "tolerance" for Western customs, it is illegal for anyone, including Western tourists, to consume alcohol anywhere.  Many Westerners are subject to breathalyzer tests at anytime, and they will sent to prison immediately if even a trace amount of alcohol is found in their system.  The lesson here, don't drink anywhere in Dubai, not even on the plane.  Or better yet, just stay out of Dubai altogether.
