The Execution of Tuti Tursilawati

After sitting in prison for eight years, Saudi Arabia has carried out the execution of Indonesian woman Tuti Tursilawati.  Her crime?  Defending herself from being raped.  Saudi Arabia currently has millions of documented and undocumented foreigners working in their country, over a million alone from Indonesia.  Many come hoping for decent employment opportunities, but far too many find themselves at the mercy of a tyrannical regime that grants them no rights.  Tuti Tursilawati came to Saudi Arabia and was hired to be a maid.  One day, her employer tried to rape her, and Turi defended herself from his vicious attack.  Unfortunately, during the struggle, Tuti killed her employer.

Most nations would have been lenient in Tuti's case.  In most cases, when a woman in the West kills a man who tried to rape her, it is ruled that she acted only in self-defense and is typically freed.  This was not the case for Tuti.  Saudi authorities arrested her, and after 7 years in prison, Tuti was executed by that Saudi Arabian regime.  This execution has angered many in the international community, especially Indonesia, who does not like the fact that one of their citizens was executed on foreign soil.  It is time for the world to unite and start holding Saudi Arabia responsible for these crimes against humanity.
