The Honor Killing of Mehwish Arshad
In June of 2018, Pakistani woman Mehwish Arshad worked as bus hostess in Faisalabad, Pakistan to help support her family. One of her co-workers, a bus security guard, proposed marriage to her. Mehwish decided to act on her right to decide on who she wished to marry and politely declined her co-worker's proposal. For the security guard, Umer Daraz, the shame of being rejected was too much, and he felt the only way to regain his honor, was to murder Mehwish.
This is an unfortunate trend in many Middle Eastern societies. Many women have no say over who they wish to marry and are often forced into marriages against their will. Those who try to exercise their God-given right to choose who they want or don't want to marry often do so at great peril. Some pay the ultimate price. As of now, Umer Daraz is in police custody, but many honor-based crimes in the world go unpunished. It remains to be seen if Umer will receive justice.
