Daughter of Pakistani Imam in Hiding for Apostasy
During the month of January, 18-year-old Saudi Arabian woman Rahaf Alqunun made international headlines when she fled from Saudi Arabia and fought against getting deported back when she informed the world via social media that her family will kill her if she's sent back because she chose to leave the Islamic faith. The international outcry saved her life as she was recently granted asylum in Canada. Unfortunately, her case is not an isolated one. Throughout the world, untold thousands face death for leaving the Islamic faith because Sharia Law mandates that if you leave the faith, you must die. Even if the Islamic governments don't carry out the sentence, society often takes the law into their own hands. In many cases, those who carry out the murder of those who leave Islam are the individuals own family. Such is the case for a young Pakistani Muslim woman whom I shall call "Irene" for the purpose of ensuring her safety.
"Irene" was the daughter of a Pakistani Imam who began studying the Bible and the Qur'an after attending a Christian service. After months of soul-searching, she chose to become Christian, officially converting in February of 2018. Unfortunately, her family found out. Shortly after converting, "Irene" married a Christian man. For her family, this was more than they could bear. Sharia Law not only forbids Muslims from leaving Islam on penalty of death, it forbids Muslim women to marry non-Muslim men. By December of 2018, "Irene's" family tracked her down. They beat her husband severely and sent him to prison. After staying in prison for 30 days, "Irene's" husband was released and they fled. However, "Irene's" family is relentless. They tracked them down again and beat both of them. They then gave them both a choice "Convert to Islam, or die." They managed to escape and are now in hiding. Sadly, this is the fate of so many Pakistanis who leave Islam. They often have to live on the run, as there are so few safe places for them to go. Many are desperate for asylum to any nation that will take them in and let them worship in peace. Unfortunately, many don't know where they can turn to for help.
