Asia Bibi's Brother-in-Law Murdered in Pakistan
For over eight years Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi sat on death row for charges of "Blasphemy." Though the Pakistani Supreme Court overturned the conviction, her life was still in grave danger. Radicals had placed a $10,000 bounty on her head and Asia Bibi and her family had to but flee to Canada. Though Asia and her immediate family are safe, her extended family in Pakistan is not. On May 24th, Asia's brother-in-Law Younas Masih left home to do his daily farm work, and he never came back. The following morning Younas Masih was found with his throat slit.
Yousas Masih has become the latest victim of Asia's blasphemy case. In 2011, the Muslim Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer was murdered for speaking out on behalf of Asia Bibi. One month later, Religious Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was murdered for the same reason. When speaking of her incarceration Asia Bibi stated "I became a prisoner of fanaticism, tears were my only companions in the cell." Now, another innocent life has been claimed by this same fanaticism that cost Asia eight years of her life and her home. She can never go back to Pakistan again and will live in fear for her safety and the safety of her family for the rest of her life.
Things show no sign of getting better in Pakistan. In what can only be described as evil, radicals in Pakistan actually built a Mosque in honor of Mumtaz Qadri, the man who killed Governor Taseer. This shows that in the increasingly radicalized nation of Pakistan, the deaths of humanitarians are increasingly celebrated, and it is their killers, and not the humanitarians, who are being honored. If this trend does not change, then there will never be any hope of equality for Pakistan's religious minority communities, or for human rights in general within the nation.
