Armenians Facing Another Genocide?
Armenians Flee Nagorno-Karabakh |
The first war over the region was waged from 1988-1994 and ended with Armenia taking control of much of the disputed territory. However, in Sept. of 2020 Azerbaijan attacked with a better equipped and better trained army, taking over much of the territory that they had lost in 1994. Three years later, Azerbaijan successfully took over the entire territory, leading over 100,000 Armenian civilians to flee the region. The Sept. 2023 offensive not only witnessed Azerbaijan taking over the region and the flight of 100,000 Armenians citizens, it also witness the nation taking over land that is considered part of the Armenian nation itself. Though the World Court mandated that Azerbaijan allow the 100,000 Armenian refugees to return to their homes, many are afraid to do so as they fear living under the control of the Azeri government. Armenians who fled testified how their villages were shelled and shot at by Azeri forces without warning and many had no idea what to do, leading the Armenians to flee for their lives.
Making matters worse, Azerbaijan is now seeing an opportunity to press their advance even further. Azeri officials are now claiming that the land of the Syunik Province of Armenia (The Location of the Famous Tatev Monastery) is actually traditional Azeri territory (Western Azerbaijan) and are now threatening the region. This is nothing but a blatant lie as the Tatev Monastery and other Armenian cultural sites have been in this region for over 1,000 years, clearly showing that this is a long-standing part of the Armenian homeland.

The reality is that Azerbaijan and Turkey are to Armenia what Hamas is to Israel. Turkey attempted to wipe out the Armenian people over 100 years ago, a crime for which the leaders of the nation today have yet to acknowledge or apologize for. In the meantime, the have actively aided Azerbaijan in their war and even allowed militants from the Middle East to cross through their nation to assist Azerbaijan. Making matters worse is that the ceasefire is fragile and is being held by minimal Russian forces. However, the nation of Russia is currently preoccupied with their ongoing war in Ukraine and is in no position to prevent a full-scale war from breaking out between these nations. Many Armenians today feel that their plight is being ignored by the world, especially other Christian nations, and the fear that what happened in 1915 could very well repeat itself if the world continues to ignore this crisis.
