Nonviolence & the Jihadist Dilemma
Many famous activists like Howard Zinn have been long-time supporters of nonviolence. They believe that using violence against violence only creates and endless cycle of war and death. He condemned the 9/11 attack, but in turn also condemned the U.S. bombing and incursion into Afghanistan as a response. He condemns Palestinian terrorist attacks, but also condemns Israel's military response. However, is condemning violence enough? Shouldn't we also speak out against teachings and ideas that encourage violence? Any right-thinking non-violent activist would say "Yes, absolutely!" So then, why don't these activists speak out against the Islamist teachings that are inspiring Jihadists all over the world to carry out acts of violence?
Sadly, many of these same non-violent activists live in self-delusion. They go along with the propaganda that the actions of these Jihadists have nothing to do with the teachings of Islam. They insist on buying into the lies spoken by the Muslim Brotherhood front organization: The Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR), which falsely claims that Jihad means an internal spiritual struggle between Good and Evil, and not Holy War. Yet the Islamic sources say otherwise.
Qur'anic verses:
Surah 2:216-"Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
Not only does this verse establish that violence can be virtuous, but it also contradicts the myth that fighting is intended only in self-defense, since the audience was obviously not under attack at the time.
Surah 4:74- "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward." The martyrs of Islam are unlike the early Christians, who were led meekly to the slaughter. These Muslims are killed in battle as they attempt to inflict death and destruction for the cause of Allah. This is the theological basis for today's suicide bombers.
Surah 4:76- "Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah…"
Surah 4:89- "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."
Surah 4:95-"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame, etc.), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home).Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward "
This clearly shows that Allah prefers Muslims who fight over those who refuse to do so.
Surah 5:33- "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
Surah 8:12- "(Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels... "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"
No reasonable person would interpret this to mean a spiritual struggle
Surah 8:39- "And fight with them until there is no more fitna (disorder, unbelief) and religion is all for Allah
Surah 9:29-30-"Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. The Jews say: 'Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths. They imitate the saying of the disbelievers of old. Allah's Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!
This very clearly shows that Muslims are commanded to fight Jews and Christians for their religious beliefs, not because they are attacking Muslims (For the record, Jews don't believe Ezra is the Son of God).
Surah 9:73- "O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is the destination."
Dehumanizing those who reject Islam, by reminding Muslims that unbelievers are merely firewood for Hell, makes it easier to justify slaughter. It explains why today's devout Muslims generally have little regard for those outside the faith. The inclusion of "hypocrites" (Muslims who don't fully submit to Muhammad's commands) into the "enemy" category also contradicts the apologist's defense that the targets of hate and hostility are wartime foes
Surah 9:123-"O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you!"
Hadith Verses:
Sahih Bukhari (52:177) - Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."
Sahih Bukhari (52:256) - The Prophet... was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, "They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans)."
In this command, Muhammad establishes that it is permissible to kill non-combatants in the process of killing a perceived enemy. This provides justification for the many Islamic terror bombings.
Sahih Bukhari (52:44) - Allah's Apostle said... 'I have been made victorious with terror'
Sahih Bukhari (2:24)-Allah's Apostle said: "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform a that, then they save their lives an property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah."
Sahih Bukhari (2:24)-Allah's Apostle was asked, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and His Apostle (Muhammad). The questioner then asked, "What is the next (in goodness)? He replied, "To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's Cause."
Sahih Bukhari (52:44)-A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward)." He replied, "I do not find such a deed."
Sahih Bukhari (84:64)-I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "During the last days there will appear some young foolish people who will say the best words but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. So, where-ever you find them, kill them, for who-ever kills them shall have reward on the Day of Resurrection.“
Sahih Muslim (20:4696)-"The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: 'One who died but did not fight in the way of Allah nor did he express any desire (or determination) for Jihad died the death of a hypocrite.'"
Tabari 9:69-"Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us"
It's emphatically clear that no reasonable person who reads these verses would interpret them to mean an "internal spiritual struggle." In fact, ex-Muslims such as Nonie Darwish and Hazem Farraj attest to this. In a speech given at the 2017 ACT for America Conference, Hazem Farraj confessed that 97% of the Hadith refer to Jihad as "Holy War." In her biography "Now they Call me Infidel," Nonie Darwish stated that in her entire 30+ years of living in Cairo and Gaza, she never heard of Jihad referred to as an "internal spiritual struggle. It was always referred to as "Holy War." So my word to nonviolent activists is this: Start doing your homework, and start learning to understand the ideology that has claimed the lives of hundreds of millions of people for the past 1400 years.
